Lending our strength to
women forging their futures.

Our Mission

Helping women overcome financial barriers to education.

Financial aid can be used for tuition at not-for-profit universities, colleges, and post-secondary technical and trade schools. A portion of the funding may be used for specific purchases of supplies, equipment, books, local transportation, special fees or child care if these needs are identified in the application and are necessary to enable the recipient to attend classes or obtain a professional license or certificate upon graduation.

Our Vision

To remove barriers for women in Central Ohio who are seeking to further their education, embark on meaningful careers, become better role models, provide better lives for themselves and their families, reduce poverty and dependence on social welfare programs, and make lasting contributions to their communities.

We Believe

Women face many financial challenges in pursuing post-secondary education, not all of which can be met through traditional scholarships.  Single working mothers are particularly disadvantaged by these barriers. SOS supplements other tuition assistance and provides funding for other necessary expenses, so our recipients can complete their education and secure professional licenses and certificates without burdening themselves and their families with a legacy of debt.

Children directly benefit from their parent’s example. With support from organizations like SOS, they can grow up in an environment of encouragement and success where the value of education and the support of a broader community are appreciated and respected.  Children of our recipients often find ways to become contributors to a stronger social network.

Annual Report

Our History

Twenty two years ago, six central Ohio women organized Scholarship Opportunities for Success (SOS).  Their mission -- to help women of low income with financial aid for education.

Financial assistance was the answer, they decided.  Not only the traditional scholarship covering tuition, but grants that would meet expenses associated with attending an institution of higher learning - books, computers, gas cards, child care, bus passes, special fees and supplies.   After nearly a year of preparatory work, Scholarship Opportunities for Success received its not-for-profit designation, and the grass roots organization was ready to fulfill its mission. With funds from bake sales, a garage and craft sale, and donations, SOS awarded five $1,000 scholarships -- depleting its treasury.

SOS is celebrating its twenty second anniversary this year. The fledgling organization has grown. SOS now has 16 Board members and over 80 active volunteers, no paid personnel, all working together to help women achieve their academic goals. In 2023, SOS awarded $62,225 to 16 deserving women.

In 2009, SOS established an endowment fund with The Columbus Foundation. The decision was made for the purpose of expanding its fundraising capacity, and ensuring the sustainability of annual scholarship awards beyond the terms of personal commitments to the organization.

SOS is committed to women who face adversities as they pursue their education. The all-volunteer organization, with help from supporters and donors, will continue to work towards its mission statement.

“SOS is the reason that I am where I am today.”
